Dogfight was easily the most challenging show I’ve ever had to design. In the same vein, it was also the show I learned the most from. The original director for this production had to unexpectedly step down and an inexperienced actress stepped up to fill the position. There was not a clear unified vision for the show and I was asked to just do what I wanted. Of course, this is not how things should be done according to the design process but I wasn’t being given much to work with so I had to just make do. From what I gathered from the other departments one of the goals was to highlight that this show was a memory play. I settled on designing a set that was composed of various sheets that would be erected via flat as well as hung to look like a tattered and broken canvas. This served to reflect the broken mind of Eddie Birdlace as he was forced to remember one of the most traumatic events of his life. This design did not become a reality due to creative differences and budgetary restrictions. After a few more redesigns to account for things that the director wanted to throw in, I landed on a very barebones design that still showcased my original idea. While the 3 basic flats are not what I originally wanted, the effect of placing an overhead projector behind and creating shadow puppets and scenery still proved to be effective. Dogfight is a show I wish I could do differently, and hope to someday create my original design. Despite what could have been, I will always take this as a learning opportunity as it solidified the importance of the creative process for me.
