These architectural plans were made for SkillsUSA Architecture, which qualified for state. I designed this house off of the original ground plan I made for the play From Up Here, as the competition also asked me to attach a story to the design. This was my first ever experience with real architecture and I don’t have an architecture teacher so everything shown above I taught myself through extensive research. Within the context of the show, the owner of the house is Grace Barrett, a working mother who strives for perfection. After reading the script and understanding Grace’s character I determined that the house that I designed would realistically be one that she lived in. Grace is fundamentally a perfectionist, she desires a clean and modern house that is perfect for guests and her family alike. I determined that the perfect style of house for a perfectionist like Grace would be a mid-century modern style household with a Scandinavian shaker interior. A massive living room for plenty of friends and family to be entertained in is fundamental to what Grace would want in a house. An open dining room connected directly to the kitchen is perfect for her entertainment desires. Grace also has a husband, two children, and a sister who likes to show up unannounced. Grace and her spouse get a massive master bedroom suite with its very own walk-in closet and her children get a pair of bedrooms connected with a shared jack-and-jill style bathroom for maximum efficiency. All the primary bedrooms are in the top floor to allow for the top floor to exist as an area for privacy and rest, while the bottom floor is more for family fun and entertainment. Lastly, a guest bedroom and office are also included downstairs for any unexpected guests, which is a recurring theme in Grace’s life.

This house was tailored to Grace specifically and it exists as a complete reflection of her character within the show.
