This is the very first design/theatre project in which I made money (does this make me a professional?). Over the summer of my junior year I worked for the city of Pharr Parks and Recreation Department's Theatre Education Camp. The production of Lion King needed a fairly typical set to be designed and constructed and I was in charge of doing so. One of the artistic elements that we wanted to highlight in this production was the beauty of storytelling from all cultures (specifically African since it was Lion King). The MVP of the scenic elements were two ramps on castors made to look like hills. These hills served as natural, terrain-looking platforms to give levels to a mostly flat show. What was most impressive about these hills was that the inside had enough room to fit a smaller Rec. Aid (such as myself) and have the hills appear to be moving on by themselves. This effect allowed the magic of the pride lands to flow through the transitional elements of the show. Other scenic elements I was responsible for designing and constructing include a sunrise effect that would fold in on itself, the interior of Scar’s cave which was black butcher paper scrunched up, Mufasa’s head in the stars made of Christmas lights, and course a movable and versatile pride rock.
