Director's Message
The idea to create this documentary came to me after working on one of my best friend's original short films and falling in love with his dedication to making his art the best it possibly could be. I realized that I was surrounded by brilliant artists who had important stories to tell through the art of film. I began by establishing a sort of bullet point list that I wanted to hit throughout the documentary as well as important guiding questions I wanted my friends to answer. I tried getting the perspectives of many different types of filmmakers, such as actors, directors, and technicians. This was also my first time ever editing a full-length video which was a roadblock at first, but I swiftly overcame it. I can now confidently say that I could make a decently edited YouTube video using Final Cut Pro or similar software. While I am happy with the final result of the film, there are some things I wish I had done differently in retrospect. For starters, I emailed/messaged everyone who I needed footage from instead of doing the filming myself. While this was effective on saving time since I had school, it led to the shots being inconsistent with each other and diminishing the quality of the documentary. There were also two other individuals who I reached out to who were not able to get the footage to me, which led to the me having to use more footage from others than I initially had hoped.
I created this documentary to highlight how important the art of filmmaking has been on the lives of people around me. I want it to serve as a reminder that the art's and those who teach them are beyond crucial and cannot be cast aside, especially in the eyes of the education system.
